Meet Derrick
During your visit to the museum or stay at the campground, you might meet our esteemed Pest Management Officer, Derrick. He is very friendly, but can be prone to biting and scratching when annoyed, so please approach him with care.

Below is a Q&A about our furry co-worker
Why does Derrick not have a collar?
Derrick is a barn cat, and it is strongly advised not to give barn cats collars as they have the potential to get caught on fences and bushes and trap the cat. We have tried giving him a break-away collar, but he almost immediately removes it. He's a tricky little guy.

I'm worried about his health and wellbeing
Derrick was adopted through the AARCS Barn Buddies program, for cats not suitable for adoption to families. He is up-to-date with all his shots and has been neutered. We have him set-up in an enclosed shed on-site with his own bed and litter box, as well as some toys and scratching pads. He is fed and watered daily, and a beloved part of our museum family.

Are you sure he was unadoptable, he's so sweet?
It is undeniable that he LOVED people, but he has been aggressive to museum staff and AARCS staff. Which makes him a poor fit for a family environment.

I noticed he looks hurt...
Derrick is not the only cat in the area, and does get into fights with them sometimes. We do keep an eye on his injuries and well-being, but he is his own man, and sometimes he brawls.
